Under U.S. law there are several dozen types of Nonimmigrant Temporary Work Visas available for workers and students seeking to work or study in the United States for a limited period of time and without seeking to qualify for permanent residence here. There are nonimmigrant visas covering a whole range of specific circumstances from employees of a foreign government to au pairs, to students, to agricultural workers, to artists or entertainers engaged in culturally unique work.
One of the most important types of nonimmigrant work visas is the H-1B for temporary workers involved in a speciality occupation. These H-1B visas are available for individuals who are qualified to perform services of a
professional nature and have a company willing to sponsor their visa application in order for them to undertake a specific position for a fixed period of time. Employment authorization is granted for an initial period of up to 3 years with the possibility for extensions for an additional 3 years.
Other important nonimmigrant work visas include H-2B visas for skilled or unskilled workers to fill temporary positions with U.S. companies when there are worker shortages; O visas available for persons of extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts eduction, business or athletics.
